Therapeutic Communication: How/Why is it important?

Hey bloggers!

Therapeutic communication is important in occupational therapy because it helps the therapist gain the client's trust. You want your clients to feel relaxed and comfortable in sessions, and free to discuss what troubles they are actually having; and as a result, what they want to be able to do that holds meaning to them.

A few ways the therapist can maintain the therapeutic relationship include: (just to name a few)

  • active listening
  • open-ended questions
  • being present
  • being timely

There are so many more ways to maintain, or even strengthen, the therapeutic relationship. The key is to make sure your client feels comfortable. As I previously stated, trust is one of the main ways to do this.

stay true & keep it natural,
